Medium dog breeds

Medium sized dog breeds weigh from 25 lbs to 60 lbs and usually have a shorter life expectancy than small breeds. Medium dogs tend to have more puppies in a litter than smaller breeds. Medium sized dogs may be comfortable living in either an apartment or in a house. There is a great variety of temperaments in medium dog breeds. If you are looking for a calm medium size dog that will be your companion - consider a low energy breed such as the English Bulldog. These mid size dogs are great for less active owners that can enjoy a calmer dog that does not need more exercise than a few good walks on a daily basis. Puppies of any medium sized breed have more energy than adult dogs and are more active during the first couple of years of their life. Boxers, on the other hand are more high energy medium size dogs that can fit into a more active family. Exercise needs vary from breed to breed. Some mid size dog breeds need less exercise and other breeds may be high energy and as a result need a lot more active lifestyle.

Medium sized dogs can benefit from having a crate. A crate for mid size dog can keep the dog out of trouble when you are not around and serve as a safe place for the dog to relax at night and during the day. Early crate training is recommended for medium sized dogs for many reasons, including a more comfortable and safe way to transport the pet. Crates can also help to housetrain the medium sized dog faster as dogs do not like to eliminate in the area where they sleep and will try to wait until they are released to use a toilet. Always take the dog outside as soon as you let the dog out of the crate and praise him for eliminating in the designated dog toilet area to housetrain the dog faster. Crates are not meant for keeping the dog confined for hours on end. Always walk the dog before putting him in a crate so that he can release his energy and use a toilet before he is crated. Do not keep the dog crated for longer than a couple of hours at a time.

Mid size dog breeds can be different in terms of coat maintenance. The longer the dog's coat - the more attention you will need to dedicate to keeping the coat in best shape. There are short coated medium dog breeds and long coated mid size dog breeds.

Shedding is another factor to consider. Some medium sized dogs shed a lot and need to be brushed every day to manage the heavy shedding. Other medium sized dogs may be low shedding and do not need as much coat maintenance daily. The Basenji breed, for exampe, is a mid size dog that has a very short coat that is easy maintenance. To keep the Basenji coat in best shape - brush it with a rubber brush once a week and you're done. Other mid size breeds, such as the Cocker Spaniel, needs a daily brushing with several different brushes and monthly trims to keep the dog's coat in best shape. How much time do you have to allocate to grooming your dog?
